Things To Do In Sugar House: Fun Activities; Where to Shop; Places to Eat

One of the oldest neighborhoods in the Salt Lake Valley, and the former location of the Sugar House Prison, Sugar House has become one of the hottest and trendiest neighborhoods in Utah. Which means there are plenty of things to do in Sugar House – from entertainment, great food, and fun places to shop.

Things to do in Sugar House: Entertainment

 

Sugar House is in the heart of the city, but there are all kinds of activities for runners, cyclists, and swimmers.  Come to think of it, Sugar House is the perfect spot to train for that triathlon.  Bonus: these spots are perfect for families too.

 

  • Visit Sugar House Park – Sugar House Park, the former site of the prison, is popular year-round.  Head to the park any evening during the summer and you’ll find all kinds of activities. From organized team sports, classes, families out with kids, and people taking laps around the park itself.  Winter calls for sledding on the hills surrounding the park.
  • Go Swimming at the Fairmont Aquatic Center – For fitness buffs, if running or cycling is not your thing, head over to Fairmont Aquatic Center and swim some laps in the pool. Or take your kids to the leisure pool during hot summer days to cool off.  They also offer classes and camps for your kids too. Swimming, gymnastics, and martial arts are just a few of their offerings.
  • Hike Parley’s Trail – Parley’s trail, connects the Bonneville Shoreline trail at the mouth of Parley’s Canyon to the Jordan River Parkway.  Walk, run, or ride part or all of the eight-mile trail that runs through the heart of Sugar House.  Don’t forget to check out Parley’s Historic Nature Park at the mouth of the canyon.

Sugar House is full of small, locally-owned shops that range from quirky, to sophisticated to entirely unique.  Here are a few of our faves – the types of shops you can get lost in looking around.

 

  • Tea Zaanti-  Salt City’s Best TeaHouse. Find a wide selection of tea where you will have the opportunity of tasting some delicious and exotic options that you can’t miss. Go and have a TEA-rrific time.
  • Central Book Exchange – a staple in Sugar House for decades; they claim to have over 90,000 items in their ever-changing inventory. This is one place in which, you could quickly lose a few hours. They also happen to be our neighbors! Go on, enjoy.
  • Got Beauty – a locally owned Salon, Spa, and Boutique. Find all your beauty needs and then some. They have some great gift options as well. 

Things to do in Sugar House: Places to Eat

From bars, a little hole in the wall eateries, and posh restaurants, Sugar House has dozens of great spots – all within a few blocks of the central business district!  You’ll want to explore on your own, but here are a few of our go-to spots.

 

  • The Ruin (Best Spot to Grab a Drink) – You’ve been out all day shopping or playing, or working for that matter, and you need to unwind a little.  Check out one of Sugar House’s newest bars, The Ruin. Tucked next to Hidden Hollow in Sugar House, you’ll find friendly people, good drinks, and good food
  • Somi (A Taste of Vietnam) – Right near The Ruin, on Wilmington Plaza, you will find Somi, serving up their classic Vietnamese dishes. Their Lemongrass Beef Noodle pho is fantastic.  They also have great lunch specials.
  • BGR Sugar House (Best Place for a Fast Bite) – If a burger is more to your liking, head across the street to BGR: Burgers Grilled Right. They always have a monthly special you can only get for that month, and then it is gone. BONUS: you can get any of their burgers on a pretzel bun, what is not to love about that. Try the Korean BBQ, it may sound a little odd, but it is excellent.  They also have great vegetarian options.

When you walk into a specialty market in Salt Lake City, expect to find niche food products that are delicious, unique, and can’t be found anywhere else! Some of our favorite specialty markets for food in Salt Lake City are:

  • Caputo’s   You cannot afford to be in too much of a hurry when you visit Caputo’s. In this deli, expect to sample lots of Italian specialty goods – including fine chocolate, cured meats, cheeses, imported pasta, and olives.  Since their 3 markets and delis are situated in mixed-use neighborhoods, they are a prime spot for people-watching. Choose between half for full meals but expect original taste and an excellent experience.

  • Liberty Heights Fresh  The tagline for this deli and specialty market lets you know they source some of the best food in Salt Lake City for the best ingredients every time. The food you get at Liberty Heights Fresh is prepared with integrity so every bite, sip, or piece is accounted for. The owner carefully curates a selection of locally sourced eggs, cheeses, vegetables, and proteins as well as specialty foods from around the country.

  • Black Cherry   A  Mediterranean and Middle Eastern specialty market, The Black Cherry Market is a pinhole that offers visitors a view of the world on a plate.  With items like Turkish Delight at Arabic coffee and Halal meats, this little market is one to get lost in. You’ll find delicious fresh-baked flatbreads and yummy jams, dips, and spreads.

Food in Salt Lake City: Utah Local Sweet Shops

While a large number of farmers have turned Utah to be the farming capital of the north, a lot of entrepreneurs are making the scenery sweet. Utahns are known for their sweet tooth – which guarantees a delicious stop at some of our favorite spots:

 

  • The Chocolate Conspiracy – they make their raw and vegan chocolate bard from scratch – controlling every step of the process to ensure consistency every time. With a goal of producing authentic chocolate flavors, a bar of The Chocolate Conspiracy is what you need to nibble on as you enjoy the rest of Utah.
  • Ruby Snap – it does not matter how old you are; a trip to Utah is never complete if you have not bought some Ruby Snap goodies. Each cookie is named lovingly with an old-fashioned name; guests may come in and order “Two Viviannas, one Virginia, and one Zoey to go.” For once, here is a menu of cookies that have been made with love using only the finest ingredients which you can at least pronounce. Ruby Snap is your home of pleasant surprises when you are in the Salt Lake City food scene.
  • Bubble and Brown – a bakery that focuses on buttery pastries and cakes with minimal sugar – instead of relying on ingredients at the peak of their season to infuse sweetness and flavor.  Bubble and Brown never disappoint for breakfast pastries and special occasion cakes.
  • Dolcetti Gelato – Utah’s original gelato spot, Dolcetti Gelato offers a variety of traditional gelato flavors as well as a unique take with Utah-centric ingredients. Perfect for a hot summer’s day.

Food trucks are always on the go – moving from site to site throughout the day… If you love food in Salt Lake City, these food trucks are well worth tracking down. Here is what to expect from a few of them:

 

  • CupBop – the menu of the day will definitely keep you glued to these food trucks. CupBop is a Korean-fusion truck serving up bowls of rice, noodles, meat, kimchee, and spicy sauces ranging from 1 (not spicy at all) to 10 (flaming mouth hot).
  • Waffle Love – the Belgian waffle will make your love affair with food deeper than you can imagine. And a taste of Belgium in Salt Lake City can be found at Waffle Love. Close your eyes and wait for the toppings to surprise you because they will; you will dig in without a care in the world.
  • Fire and Slice Pizza – taste the pizzas from Fire and Slice Pizza – they are baked in a traditional (but portable) wood-fired pizza oven with unique flavors and pizzas of the day.

How to Find the Right Neighborhood for Your Family

Before kids, your choice of neighborhood probably came down to: can I afford it? Is it close to work? 

Now that you have a family, schools, safety, and access to amenities are just the start. How do you know which is the best family neighborhood in your city?

Consider Your Lifestyle Needs

Some families are outdoorsy and active, always on the go. For that reason, the heart of the city may not be the best neighborhood for your family. Other families prefer the variety of music lessons and sports teams offered downtown.

Knowing what your lifestyle requires or what you want to offer for your kids as they grow up is key. Maybe your child has certain medical needs that require you to be close to a hospital. Please make a list of your family needs and keep it handy as you research where to move.

The Best Places to Grab a Beer in Salt Lake

Beer in Salt Lake is getting a makeover. Local beer enthusiasts have something besides great, local craft beer to celebrate these days.

In a recent move by the Utah Legislature, a compromise has been reached on allowing 4% beer to be sold in grocery and convenient stores throughout Utah. This increase, previously the alcohol content in beer in Utah was 3.2%, was determined based on information received from certain beer manufacturers hinting they would no longer be making the reduced brew. Craft beer drinkers have already been consuming a heavier brew as breweries tend to produce a 4% or higher product.

The first Squatters beer was poured in 1989, since then the demand for their handcrafted beer has surged and you can find their award-winning brews in many local restaurants, hotels, bars, resorts, and the airport. From a double IPA (Hop Rising) to their hefeweizen (American Wheat) the variety of brews provides a tasty exploration.

Boeheim Brewery

Since 2001, Boeheim Brewery has been producing old central-European lagers. On a mission to perfect the ‘the old school brew”, the legendary Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, the brewers at Boeheim take their sweet time crafting the best lager, in small batches, using only natural ingredients. Try the 1842 Czech Pilsener, the signature taste first brewed in 1842, it’s a classic.

Proudly known as Utah’s largest beer bar, The Bayou offers local microbreweries an extensive selection of bottled beers. If tasting various local beer is on your bucket list, head over to The Bayou. Epic, 2 Row, Kiitos, and Moab are all on deck. And that is really just naming a few.

Utah’s first brewery, offering craft beer since 1986.  Wasatch Brewery offers award-winning brew that now only comes in cans, or on draft. With its quirky message “Why have just one” having a good time with Utah’s controversial past, Polygamy Porter was no joke when it came to taste and full flavor in a beer.  Try the Evolution amber ale or the Snowbird session IPA, maybe the clever names make them taste even better.
